Step 1: Check Your Bills

  • Monthly Enbridge Bill: If you receive a bill from Enbridge (paper or e-bill), you likely use gas as your primary heating fuel.

  • Hint: If your annual bill is less than $500, you might have electric heating with gas used for water heating, fireplaces, etc.

Step 2: Look for a Fuel Tank

  • Large Fuel Tank on Property: If you have a large fuel tank in your yard or basement that receives annual fuel deliveries, check the latest invoice for the fuel type.

  • Hint: A submarine-shaped tank in the yard is likely propane; a tank in the basement is likely oil.

Step 3: Consider Electric Heating

  • No Fuel Bills: If you don’t receive bills for gas, oil, propane, or any other fuel, your heating source is likely electric, such as electric baseboards or an electric furnace.

  • Hint: Unlike combustion furnaces, electric furnaces don’t have metal or plastic/PVC exhaust pipes.

Step 4: Inspect the Equipment

  • Check for Labels or Markings: Examine your heating equipment for labels or markings that indicate the type of fuel it uses.

Step 5: Review Documentation

  • Check Manuals: Refer to any documentation or manuals you have for the heating system. These often specify the required fuel type. Manuals are usually left on or near the equipment by the installer.

Step 6: Ask Around

  • Consult Household Members: Someone else in your household might know the type of heating fuel used.
