Condos are naturally energy-efficient, thanks to shared walls and smaller spaces. But how can you take it further and electrify your condo? Here’s a quick guide to help you out.

1. Electrify Heating and Cooling

Fuel switching to electric heat pumps will slash your emissions and boost comfort. The smaller sizing for heat pumps makes them a better fit for apartments and condos. Just be prepared to navigate condo board regulations—more on that soon.

2. Opt for Efficient Hot Water

Condos have lower heating and cooling loads. That’s great! But it means heating and cooling make up a lower percentage of your total energy consumption.

That makes water heating a top priority. You use the same amount of hot water as homeowners in detached homes but electrifying your hot water tank and reducing water consumption with low-flow showerheads will make a bigger impact for you.

3. Electrify Your Cooking!

Following the same logic, choosing electric options for cooking is a great move. It saves energy but more importantly, it improves indoor air quality. This is more important in smaller condo spaces where the pollutants from gas stoves have a bigger impact.

4. Work with Your Condo Board

Condo boards can be strict about modifications. Before proposing changes, check the bylaws and gather support from neighbors who’ve made similar upgrades.

If none of your neighbours have done it, you might be the first to install a heat pump— lead the way!
